West Island College –Class Afloat is an international experiential education boarding school located in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada. Its mission is to broaden student understanding of international issues while preparing them for responsible global citizenship in the 21st century. The concept of “taking the classroom to the world” is intended to encourage self-sufficiency, cooperation, and a clear awareness of other cultures. Each academic year, 96 qualifying high school students spend one semester at the historic land-based boarding school and one semester working as crew and studying aboard the Concordia, a modern tall ship. A fully certified faculty instructs students in a full curriculum including social studies and global issues, anthropology, marine biology, maths, sciences and physical education. Optional non-credit enrichment courses are also offered in seamanship, celestial navigation, and the history and traditions of the sea. Over 1000 students have joined Class Afloat and sailed the world for an academic semester or full year program. Applications from 11th and 12th grade coeds are encouraged and accepted year-round. Class Afloat also offers a university GAP year programme.
